About Janmashtami

The birthday of Shree Krishna who is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu is celebrated by all the Hindus with much pomp and fanfare. The Hindu mythology depicts the fascinating birth of Krishna.

Krishna's parents Devaki and Vasudev was but behind the bars by his maternal uncle Kansa who was the king of Mathura. Kansa was prophesied by Naradmuni - a sage and follower of Lord Vishnu that he will be killed by the eighth child of Kansa. This enraged the king and put his sister and her husband into prison as he didn't want to take any chance. Kansa continued to kill all the seven new born babies and then the eighth child - the nemesis of Kansa was born. A divine sound instructed Vasudev to take his son to his friend Nand and his wife Yashoda in Gokul, a city on the banks of river Yamuna. Vasudev took the boy miraculously away from the prison and took their son to Gokul. There, Yashoda gave birth to a girl and Vasudev replaced her with Krishna - the name of their son.
